These biomarkers must be sensitive and specific and, in many cases, used in combination to capture the complexity of diseases involving multiple pathways. Biomarkers include nucleic acids, cells, proteins, and metabolites, which can be measured in tissues and bodily fluids. Additionally, digital biomarkers gathered through wearable devices track physiological signals such as heart rate, gait, breathing rate, voice, or temperature.

By integrating multiple biomarker types, including digital biomarkers, researchers can develop comprehensive biomarker fingerprints or signatures. These provide a more accurate picture of patient responses, enabling better-targeted treatments and improved outcome predictions.

Biomarker data, like all healthcare data, is sensitive and personal, and anonymization in research, and security in both research and healthcare are paramount. The infrastructure required to create, securely store, manage, and analyze this volume of data secure can be very costly.
